Big Wins in Small Steps: Winston’s Reactive Dog Journey

A journey of trust, teamwork, and transformation.

For 10 weeks, I had the absolute pleasure of working with Wendy and her wonderful dog, Winston, through One-to-One training—and what a journey it’s been.

When I first met Winston, he was hyper-alert and constantly scanning his environment. Every walk was a mission for him: eyes darting, body tense, ready to respond to every movement, every sound. He was disconnected from Wendy and fully absorbed in the world around him. His reactivity wasn’t aggression—it stemmed from a strong, natural herding and stalking instinct. Winston is a true working dog at heart, and he was doing what his genetics had programmed him to do. But that level of intensity made everyday life a real challenge.

Fast forward to today, and Winston is a different dog. He walks on a loose lead, checks in with his handler, and responds beautifully to cues. He’s still environment-aware (as most collies are), but he’s no longer overwhelmed by it. Instead of reacting impulsively, he now thinks first. He’s learned that he can trust his person and focus on her, even when the world feels busy or uncertain.

How We Got There

Progress like this doesn’t happen overnight—it takes commitment, teamwork, and a deep understanding of the dog in front of you.

We focused on:

• Impulse control games to help Winston pause and think before reacting.

• Stalking-style games that channelled his natural instincts in a structured, healthy way.

• Engage/disengage exercises that gently shifted his emotional response around triggers.

• Focus-building and calmness work to reframe his mindset on walks and around distractions.

  
  

Together, these techniques created a more confident, focused, and responsive dog. One who feels more secure in himself and his surroundings.

A Final Session to Remember

On our final session together, Winston passed two cockapoos with calm confidence. No lunging, no barking—just a composed dog checking in with his handler and walking on. It was such a proud moment and a real reflection of the work Wendy has put in.

Behind Every Reactive Dog Is a Committed Owner

It’s easy to celebrate Winston, but just as much praise belongs to Wendy. Supporting a reactive dog isn’t always easy—it takes time, patience, and emotional resilience. But Wendy embraced the process wholeheartedly. She now has the tools, knowledge, and, most importantly, the confidence to continue supporting Winston on his journey.

It’s been a privilege to walk this journey alongside you both. Training reactive dogs is never linear, but with each small win, the bond grows deeper and the progress more powerful.
